Quick to read and easily shared, the short story is said to be the literature of our times. The Shanghai American Center invites you on a journey to get to know some of the best short stories in American literature.

詹姆斯 · 鲍德温是美国二十世纪中期最伟大的作家之一，他笔下的故事跨越了他身份的许多方面—— 黑人、男性、、侨居者和社会活动家，他的写作背景是 20 世纪 50 年代至 80 年代美国蓬勃发展的艺术和社会运动。 他的作品探索了美国复杂的种族、性和阶级问题，美国黑人、民权运动、者和解放运动等等都曾是他的创作主题。

James Baldwin, one of America’s greatest mid-twentieth century authors, penned moving stories traversing the many aspects of his identity.  Black, male, gay, expatriate, and a social activist, he wrote against the backdrop of burgeoning artistic and social movements taking place in America from the 1950s into the 1980s.  In his work he explores the intricacies of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in America, creating narratives that capture the depth of Black life in America, the Civil Rights Movement, homosexual life in America, and the Gay Liberation Movement.

In his 1957 short story “Sonny’s Blues,” Baldwin explores the intertwining relationships between fear and comfort, suffering and relief, responsibility and passion.  In this alluring tale of limited options for Black men in Harlem and the search for meaning across generations and communities, Baldwin examines the role of empathy in redemption and the grace of filling silence with music.

During this time, the audience must wear masks, maintain social distancing requirements, take temperature test and show a Shanghai health code before entering the Shanghai American Center. Please be sure to RSVP if you intend to come. Programs begin on time and seats are subject to space availability. If the room is full when you arrive, you might not be granted entry, even if you RSVP'd. We can only seat the first 60 guests a t this time.

Doors will open and security screening will commence 15 minutes before the program starts. You must bring a valid physical photo ID in order to enter the Shanghai American Center (ShAC). Copies or pictures of IDs will not be accepted.

All belongings carried into the ShAC will be scanned during security screening. While guests may not bring laptop computers to Shanghai American Center programs, portable electronic devices, such as mobile phones, iPads and other tablets, and smartwatches are permitted.

Press inquiries should be directed to the U.S. Consulate Shanghai Press Office. Additionally, audio or video recording of the program will not be permitted.

活动参与者永久性授权上海美国中心和美国国务院在包括互联网在内的任何合法的政府和非政府出版物中发布、展示、编辑、更改、复制或分发其肖像，并无需支付酬劳或者申请批准。
All program participants grant the Shanghai American Center and the U.S. Department of State permission to publish, exhibit, edit, alter, copy, or distribute their likeness in a photograph in any and all publications for Government or non-government purposes, including website entries and any lawful purpose, without payment, approval, or any other consideration in perpetuity.
